11/12/2017 0 Comments 11/11/17: Akron Mini Maker FaireThe team presented at the Akron Mini Maker Faire yesterday! While we talked to people of all ages about FIRST and FTC, we allowed kids to drive around the test robots we had constructed. We also talked with other robotics teams that attended; the VEX team from Bio-Med Science Academy and the University of Akron NASA robotics team. It was a great experience to be able to talk about what we do while witnessing so much other creativity and ingenuity!

11/9/2017 0 Comments 10/18/17: AMETEKOur team visited the AMETEK Headquarters in Kent, OH. They gave us a presentation about their company and how they make motors, fans, pumps, and other components for specialized mechanical applications. We then got a tour of their mechanics and flow labs where we learned how they construct and test their motors, perform troubleshooting and make prototypes for their customers and clients. Afterwards, we gave them a presentation about FIRST, about what we do and demonstrated our robot. They were a very engaged and interested audience, and they gave us great advice about careers in engineering and industry.
In order to machine the metal parts of our drive train with extreme precision, the team reached out to Ron-Al Mold and Machine Inc. in Kent. Members of our team visited their facility to present to co-owner Ron Siciliano about FTC and the robot design. Intrigued by the competition, Mr. Siciliano offered assistance with producing the parts, for which we are very thankful. He also gave a tour of the workshop, explaining all facets of the company and the work they perform.

Our team went to Brimfield Elementary to teach students about FIRST and robotics. They were interested in the robot and we played catch using our ball shooter mechanism from Velocity Vortex. We also had fun playing games. We were happy to have kids and parents interested in Robotics!

The attending members assisted in workshop instruction, helping teams troubleshoot problems, setup and teardown. They helped teach the introduction to programming course for the EV3 program. The team was approached to potentially play a bigger role in the workshop next year.

The team members attended Advanced Java Programming and 3D Printing Workshops. After the workshops, the team had lunch, and the attendees of the Kick Off viewed the game animation for this season, as well as created strategies for the multitude of tasks this year.

For our first meeting, we thought it would be fun to bring in the competition robot from last season to show the kids. While the children enjoyed firing and catching the balls from the robot, we talked to the coached about the basics of FTC and what higher levels of FIRST competitions are like.
11/9/2017 0 Comments 08/28/17: Steere EnterprisesSteere Enterprises held a tour for the team and allowed us to present about FTC. Steere specializes in making injection molded parts, and we are thankful they gave us a glimpse into their manufacturing process. The team especially enjoyed watching the injection mold robot that would created new parts before their eyes. It was fascinating to see their machines at work.
